Qualified writers may use the same form to apply for the Isobel Lodge Award. Read more about this award.

1. read The Rules! Here are the most important ones

  • Make sure your story is 2,000 words or fewer. If it is one word over the limit it will be disqualified

  • Make sure your name does not appear anywhere in your story document. All judging is anonymous. Your story comes to us with your entry form. Both are assigned a number and there is no risk of losing track of who has sent which story.

  • Your story should not have been previously published, online or in print.

  • You may enter the same story in other competitions at the same time but if the story is selected for publication let us know so that we may withdraw it from our competition.

  • The short story competition is open to writers worldwide and has prizes of £1000 first prixe, £500 second prize and £250 third prize.

  • Your story can be on any topic. Please read all the rules before entering!

  • Payment of £10 per story can be made by credit/debit card or cheque.
After successfully completing the form, you will be taken to the payment page.
    Follow the instructions there.

2. check check check - Will your story be disqualified?!

Every year, we disqualify at least half a dozen stories because they are over the word limit, because the file type is unreadable to us, or because the author’s name is given in the story document (including ‘header’ pages). Make sure your story is not one of them this year. Check the word count is not over 2,000 words. Make sure you have it in .docx (preferred), .doc or .pdf and not .odt or .pages format. Check your name is nowhere in the attached story document(s). If in doubt, contact us.

3. Complete the entry form and attach your story/stories

After clicking Submit you should be taken to the Payment Page — if not, scroll back up to see what fields you need to correct.
On the Payment Page, select a method of payment and follow the simple instructions.
You will receive a copy of your entry via email from ‘wufoo’, a receipt email from CAF and, not long after, a formal acknowledgement from us.
